Scouting Safety Moment

It is recommended to include a Scouting Safety Moment during meetings to inform Scouts and parents and keep everyone safe. Numerous Scouting Safety Moments are available here.

BSA SAFE Logo
Mindful Breathing

Mindful breathing is a simple way to help your mind and body calm down when you are feeling stressed or anxious. Mindful breathing simply means noticing each breath as it goes in and out. It can lower stress and make it easier to think clearly in difficult moments.

Be A Leader in Safeguarding

A safe Scouting environment is created through the everyday actions of everyone involved. Leaders and volunteers play an important role by modeling positive behavior, respecting appropriate boundaries, and speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

By working together and staying mindful of how one’s actions affect others, the Scouting community can help ensure that every young person has a safe, welcoming place to learn, grow, and thrive.

Take a moment to review and share the “Be A Leader in Safeguarding” poster for simple reminders about how everyone can help keep Scouting safe.

2026-2028 Membership Transition: The Move to February

Beginning in September 2026, Scouting America is shifting all unit renewals to February. Starting in 2027, member (adult and youth) renewals will also shift to February.

This strategic shift will create a true “renewal season,” improve retention, better capture those who join in peak recruiting season, and, most importantly, put leaders in control of the renewal process. In addition, these shifts lower the initial fee to join, eliminate the 2-month lapse period, and align safeguarding training to renewal dates. These changes directly support membership AND retention.

See the “Scouting America 2026-2028 Membership Transition: The Move to February” handout for more information on the transition plan and impact.

How to Take Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT)

Safeguarding youth is Scouting America’s highest priority. As part of the commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for every young person, all adult Scouting America leaders must have current Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT).

Common issues in completing training are:

  • If viewing the training in full screen mode, you may not see the “forward” button when the video ends. You must exit full screen mode for the video by using the ESC key or hovering the cursor over the full screen icon in the lower right of the screen and clicking to exit full screen mode. When the screen exits full screen mode, click on the “forward” button.
  • Are you taking the correct course? Everyone must take the Safeguarding Youth Training full version (90 minutes) before they are ready to take the Safeguarding Youth Training Refresher course (20 minutes). If you have already completed the full course but do not take the refresher within 7 days of its expiration, you must take the original course again.
    • Log into my.Scouting.org.
    • Go to “My Training.”
    • Go to “My Required Training,” scroll to “Safeguarding Youth Training,” and select “Retake Course.”
Fee Waiver for Military Families

Scouting America is committed to expanding access to Scouting for military-connected youth.

Scouting America is waiving the $85 national youth registration fee for eligible military families through a verification and code process during online registration. See the Military Family Fee Waiver handout for details.

Key Points to Remember:

  • Eligibility and verification processes were set by the National Council of Scouting America and may not be altered locally.
  • The fee waiver is for online registration only. There are no workarounds or other options.
  • There is a verification process in place to verify military status as part of the registration process.

Pipsico Tree Photos

A favorite stop on a Pipsico Scout Reservation hike is the Pipsico Tree, a tulip poplar nearly 20 feet in circumference that predates the arrival of the first English colonists.

Pipsico’s Heritage Area team and volunteer camp maintenance team, the Busy Beavers, are seeking your photos with the Pipsico Tree for a collage and slideshow. Please send any photos to klull179@gmail.com to be included in the display.

Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate. Tidewater Council’s goal is to raise $550,000 through Friends of Scouting in 2026.

More Ways to Support
Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

Since 1997, the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) has been the officially sanctioned, non-profit fundraising program for over 120,000 Commonwealth employees to safely and easily donate to their favorite causes throughout the year. To designate a CVC gift to Scouting America Tidewater Council, use CVC Code 200883.

United Way Donor Designations

Tidewater Council is a partner agency with Albemarle Area United Way and United Way of South Hampton Roads.

  • To designate an Albemarle Area United Way gift to support local Scouting, indicate Scouting America Tidewater Council (4004) on the pledge card.
  • To designate a United Way of South Hampton Roads contribution, indicate Scouting America Tidewater Council on the pledge card.
Tribute Gifts

Is a loved one celebrating a graduation, birthday, or Scouting milestone? Many who seek a way to remember or recognize others, choose to express their thoughtfulness with a tribute gift.

James E. West Fellowship Award

The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Tidewater Council endowment fund. This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor’s annual gift to the council’s Friends of Scouting campaign.

Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of someone — an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, Living Legend, or any outstanding Scout or Scouter.

Service Hours

Tidewater Council reports Scouts’ service hours to United Way and other funders, and this information impacts the amount of their financial gifts. Reporting service hours helps show the community impact of local Scouting programs. Scouts are already doing a Good Turn daily – it just takes a few minutes more to record their community service.

Scouts BSA Troops 259 and 5259 at the 38th Annual Nansemond Indian Pow Wow

Scouts BSA Troops 5259 and 259 combined outdoor adventure with an opportunity to learn about the culture and traditions of the Nansemond Indian Nation with a camping weekend on August 14-16.

The Scouts camped at Sleepy Hole Park and cooked meals over an open fire, with a menu of grains, vegetables, and poultry rooted in local culture and history. They played traditional American Indian games and worked on the requirements for the American Indian Culture merit badge.

On Saturday, more than 20 Scouts boarded canoes and paddled across the Nansemond River to attend the 38th Annual Nansemond Indian Pow Wow, and to participate when invited. A former U.S. Marine, who is a Vietnam Veteran, a retired teacher, and an Indian Chief, gave the Scouts a sacred blessing. The troops then paddled back to Sleepy Hole Park for another night of camping.

The engaging experience supported the Scouts’ advancement, with many completing requirements for the American Indian Culture merit badge, Canoeing merit badge, Camping merit badge, Cooking merit badge, Conservation Good Turn Award, World Conservation Award, Soil and Water Conservation merit badge, and several rank requirements. The weekend also provided an opportunity for Scouts to support the Scouting For Clean Waterways initiative by cleaning up litter in the Nansemond watershed.

By combining hands-on outdoor skills with opportunities to learn from and engage respectfully with the Nansemond Indian Nation, the Scouts experienced a memorable weekend of adventure, learning, and personal growth.

We want to hear from you! Send stories, photos, and videos of your Scouts in action to alison.harrison@scouting.org (with parental permission, of course).
