With only his Eagle Scout badge and a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina, John Fain began his career in 1970 as a Systems Engineer for Duke Power Company in Charlotte. North Carolina. Within two years, he advanced to the manager of the Design Engineering Computer Group.
In 1973, Fain began an Independent Data Processing Consulting practice. For six years, he served various clients in Virginia, North Carolina, and Ohio.
In 1979, Mr. Fain founded Metro Information Services (Metro), an information technology consulting firm, and served as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Metro went public in January 1997.
From 1979 to 2001, Metro grew to a staff of 3,500 in 44 locations. Company revenues exceeded $300,000,000 in 2000. John H. Fain made Metro Information Services a consulting company in Hampton Roads. Metro merged with Keane, Inc., in Boston in November 2001, and Mr. Fain served on the board of directors until 2005.
Before Metro merged with Keane, Inc. in 2001, it was listed in the Inc. 500 for six consecutive years (1982-1987) and was later added to the AT&T/Inc. 500 Hall of Fame. Metro was ranked #33 on the Forbes 200 Best Small Companies in America and was recognized as the City of Virginia Beach Business of the Year in 1985.
He has served on the Board of Trustees for the Virginia Aquarium, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Cape Henry Collegiate School, and on the Executive Board of Keane, Inc., Virginia Beach Foundation, and Sentara Health System. He also served on the executive board and endowment committee of Tidewater Council, BSA, and was King Triton for the 2002 Virginia Beach Neptune Festival.
Currently, Mr. Fain is the president of Fain Enterprises, LLC. He was named Virginia Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998 and Hampton Roads High Tech Entrepreneur of the Year in 1999.
