Friends of Scouting

Tidewater Council is facing financial setbacks with the loss of camping and activity revenue, declines in Scout Shop sales, and postponed fundraising events and Friends of Scouting presentations. It is more important now than ever that the families and businesses who have the means to support Scouting continue to give generously. Families who are economically-impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are depending on us to make Scouting more affordable for all. If you are able, please make a gift to help us continue the mission of Scouting.

The recently-passed CARES Act includes a provision for taxpayers who don’t itemize to take an “above the line” deduction for charitable gifts of up to $300 ($600 for a married couple). This means that gifts to Tidewater Council may be tax deductible, even if you take the standard deduction. This is not intended as legal advice; please consult with your tax adviser.

Annual Leadership Breakfast

September 22

Tidewater Council has made the difficult decision to postpone our Annual Leadership Breakfast until September, because the health and safety of the community is our top priority.

The extended shutdowns have put Tidewater Council in a difficult financial position. Please consider making your financial gift to Tidewater Council today. You can donate online or fill out a pledge card and submit it to shannon.foster@scouting.org.

Keynote speaker Kevin Greene, an Eagle Scout and NFL Hall of Famer, will join us for the Annual Leadership Breakfast this fall. RSVP to Shannon Foster

Albemarle District Camporee

October 23-25

There are many legends about the origins of the Scottish Games. The oldest traces the Games tradition back to the period of Roman invasions in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, where Scottish warriors reputedly displayed their bravery and strength by performing feats of skill and power in front of the opposing army. The most widely accepted tale describes the Games as informal athletic tests by which Kings and Clan Chiefs examined the agility, cunning, and physical strength of their clansmen. The victors of these trials were then awarded positions of leadership both on the battlefield and within the clan. The Scottish Highland Games or “Heavy Events” are the modem continuation of this ancient Celtic tradition. Each event you watch today may look like a simple matter of brute strength, but each also requires excellent timing, balance, and technique (they also require a kilt!). Join us in Maple, NC this fall for some Highlander games.

Journey to Excellence

Journey to Excellence (JTE) is built upon a grassroots effort by Scouters to recognize units that are delivering the promise of Scouting, as well as provide a framework for continuous improvement. The National Council is working with a team of volunteers to evaluate and edit the JTE scorecards for 2020 in light of COVID-19-related restrictions.

While JTE will change for 2020, it’s worth noting that Scouting itself has continued. It’s been truly inspiring to see Scouts continue meeting, serving others, and having fun from home.

Scout Shop

Shop Local! The Tidewater Council Scout Shop is the only place where you can purchase official BSA merchandise and have the proceeds stay in our local Scouting community.

As we transition to late spring with warm weather and summer fun ahead, the Scout Shop is prepared to meet your needs, whether it’s for awards, camping, uniforms, books, or merit badge pamphlets. Even though there have been some recent changes, many things remain the same.

We are still OPEN! Our hours are a little shorter, but we are still available for shopping or to turn in paperwork. Let us know how we can help you! We can ship orders or get an order together for pickup, whatever works best for each customer.

We are well-stocked. The NEW Scout pants for boys came in last month, and previous styles are still on sale: $5 off each pair. Summer camping requires a whole list of items, and many of them can be purchased from the Scout Shop. Just call us or email your requests.

NEED AWARDS? Simply email an advancement form with a list of needed items, and we can send anything you need. Don’t forget to use a SCOUTBOOK advancement form so you can get free ranks. If you have a store account, the process to ship an order is even easier. Many Scouts are continuing to meet virtually and advance – and we’re here to help keep the award process simple and safe. We also still have Scout Sunday, Blue & Gold, and Pinewood Derby patches in stock.

DON’T FORGET about leaders! Everyone appreciates recognition and we have plaques to recognize Den Leaders, Cubmasters, and Scouts BSA leaders. Prices range from $24.99 to $29.99.

We have CAMPING gear, suitable for a backyard campout or for summer camp. Sleeping bags, mats, mess kits, water bottles, mosquito netting, and many other items are in stock.

To get an order shipped, just call (757-497-2688) or email (polly.fugate@scouting.org). We will get the order together, calculate shipping (USPS), and return your call for a credit card number (Mastercard or VISA) or store account authorization.

While many people are staying in these days, the Scout Shop is open with modified hours. The new hours are:

Tuesday – Friday: 11 AM – 4 PM
Saturday: Noon – 3 PM
Sunday – Monday: Closed

Please note that if you need to stop by and are unable to during our opening hours, email Polly Fugate and we can make arrangements.

Our next holiday closing will be May 23-25 (Saturday through Monday) for Memorial Day weekend.

Product Sales

Camp Cards

Even though many Camp Cards are being sold, there are still some available! With the complications and restrictions caused by the pandemic, we are extending the Camp Card sale.

We will now be selling Camp Cards through June! Packs, Troops, Crews, Ships, and Posts now have until July 3rd to return their cards and not be charged.

Let’s spend the next month and a half getting the funds needed to go camping again!

Popcorn

The 2020 popcorn sale will run from August to November. Many of the aspects of the sale that you love will stay the same, like the Pecatonica River Popcorn line, free shipping for online sales, and some of the highest unit commissions in the country. And we’re adding new features to make the sale even better, including a user-friendly app and new prizes. Our team is working to build the best possible sale, and will share more information soon.

Unit Popcorn Kernels lead and manage each unit’s sale. Use the job description linked below to identify the best Unit Popcorn Kernel for your unit. The electronic sign-up portal is coming soon.

How-To: Internet Advancement Activity Logs

A recent upgrade to Internet Advancement allows service hours to flow into Journey to Excellence. This means you don’t have to log items into two databases! View the embedded video for a quick tutorial of this new feature.

SCOUT Strong

While organized team sports are on hiatus, what are you and your Scouts doing to stay active? Both youth and adults can participate in SCOUTStrong programs and even earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA).

PALA includes challenges to meet daily activity goals and healthy eating goals. The health benefits increase as you add in new goals each week. Stick with the program, and you can earn the SCOUTStrong PALA patch in less than two months.

BSA Podcasts

The BSA offers monthly podcasts for each program area, each running about 10-15 minutes. You can subscribe to them or listen across many platforms. Some of the current and upcoming podcasts are:

  • April – Finding your Adventure
  • March – How Venturing Can Help Your Troop

CubCast: For Cub Scouting

Faithful 3

The Chartered Organization Representative, the Chaplain, and the Chaplain’s Aide are known in their units as the “Faithful 3.” A training course has been developed to support the vital role of the Faithful 3 as they work hand-in-hand to provide extraordinary faithful service to their Scouters. Members of the National Religious Relationships Committee and representatives of many different faith groups worked together to develop the online training for Chaplains. The entire training can be completed in an hour, and covers topics including “Chaplain Roles & Responsibilities,” “Religious Emblems & Awards,” and “Interfaith Considerations.”

BSA Learn Center Update

The BSA Learn Center is undergoing an upgrade this month and moving to a new platform. If you are partway through any individual modules, please complete them by May 18 to ensure you don’t lose your progress. Completed modules will transfer over. The new platform will be more user friendly and will include updated videos.

Adult Leader Recognition

Recognize your unit’s leadership for the outstanding work they do. There are adult awards, available across all Scouting programs, designed to recognize Scout leaders for tenure, training, and performance in their leadership roles. Some awards require attendance either at a University of Scouting or at several Roundtable sessions (virtual Roundtables count!). Many Scouters have already fulfilled the requirements and simply need to submit the paperwork. More information and the award forms are available here (scroll to the bottom for the “Training Awards” section).

Guide to Awards and Insignias

Do you know where to wear the Mile Swim patch? How about the Whittling Chip patch? The answers are in the Guide to Awards and Insignia, available for purchase at the Scout Shop or viewable online.

Serving Scouts with Disabilities

All youth want to participate fully and be respected. While there are, by necessity, units exclusively composed of Scouts with disabilities, experience has shown that Scouting usually succeeds best when Scouts with disabilities are part of a traditional unit. There are many resources available to help leaders:

National Scout Jamboree

Character is created when you achieve more than you thought possible.

Scouting uniquely prepares its members to redefine their boundaries, push past them, and emerge from the experience with the confidence that no matter the challenge, they can meet it. Nothing is impossible for the prepared young person, and no future is out of reach for a group of committed people who care. The limits people perceive are self-imposed, and with an embrace and application of the Scout Law and Scout Oath, there is a bright and positive future.

Tidewater Council is planning to send 70 youth and 14 adults to the 2021 National Jamboree. Do you want to be among the group that gets to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event? Now is the time to make your reservation. This event will be held July 21-30, 2021 at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.

Scouting’s flagship event is a gathering of approximately 40,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff. Held every four years, the Jamboree is an amazing opportunity for participants, volunteers, and visitors to experience the best of Scouting, all in one place. Features include:

  • One of the longest zip line courses in North America
  • A world-class skate park
  • ATV offerings
  • Treetop canopy tours
  • Rock climbing
  • Patch trading
  • Stadium shows
  • And much more!
Register Now to be Eligible for Scholarships

Financial support is available for a portion of the Jamboree fee, but to be eligible, participants must be registered and approved before an application can be accepted. See the council 2021 NSJ webpage and look under the “SCHOLARSHIPS” section for more information. The scholarship application deadline is May 31, 2020.

Digital Safety and Online Scouting Activities

As our community moves to more online interactions, remember to keep youth safety as the top priority.

A fitting BSA Safety Moment to share with families in your unit is Digital Safety and Online Scouting Activities.

Highlights include:

  • Follow all youth protection policies.
  • Use business-oriented conference platforms instead of platforms with other primary purposes (such as gaming).
  • Regularly review and implement the latest security features of your chosen platform to avoid unauthorized visitors or other security issues in your meetings.
  • Do not record online activities/meetings that include youth participants.
  • Safeguard personal information.
  • Collecting personal information from youth under 13 is not recommended.

The FBI Boston Division has issued these recommendations for Zoom conferencing:

  • Do not make meetings or classrooms public. In Zoom, there are two options to make a meeting private: require a meeting password or use the waiting room feature and control the admittance of guests.
  • Do not share a link to a teleconference or classroom on an unrestricted publicly available social media post. Provide the link directly to specific people.
• Manage screensharing options. In Zoom, change screensharing to “Host Only.”
  • Ensure users are using the updated version of remote access/meeting applications. In January 2020, Zoom updated their software. In their security update, the teleconference software provider added passwords by default for meetings and disabled the ability to randomly scan for meetings to join.

Zoom has provided additional guidance as well.

Canceled: 2020 World Championship Pinewood Derby

District Pinewood Derbies - The Virtual Races!

We collected the fastest cars in Three Rivers district and Bayside district and put them to the test! The two district Derbies livestreamed on Facebook on May 9. If you missed the live races, you can view the recordings.

Three Rivers

A very small contingent of volunteers, led by Three Rivers District Pinewood Derby Chair Paul Hunter, raced 41 cars. The fastest time clocked was recorded by Webelos Scout Jean-Paul’s car, racing down the track in 2.56 seconds at a calculated speed of 197.68 MPH. Thanks to all who dropped off their cars for the races!

National Camp-In

Many Tidewater Council youth, leaders, and families participated in the BSA National Camp-in on May 2. There were presentations throughout the day, including: Q&A with NASA astronaut Doug Wheelock, STEM with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and movie-making with Director/Producer Francis Lawrence. There were also demonstrations on campsite construction and cooking, a virtual 5K hike, fitness with Scout Ninja, and much more. Recordings are available on the National Council’s Facebook page.

Troop 364
Troop 150
Troop 504
Pack 375
Pack 158

Eighteen Cub Scouts from Pack 375, along with their families, participated. Some pitched tents in their backyards, while others put their tents in their living rooms. They enjoyed camp food and some participated in the 5K hike. Following the event, the pack had their own Zoom campfire, and each Scout shared what they did to have fun with their families. Families in Pack 158 also enjoyed various forms of camping. Members of Troop 150 supported the event and participated in the virtual 5K hike to benefit Feeding America. Scouts from Troop 504 had fun with camping, cooking, and a family game of backyard volleyball. Troop 364 Scouts camped out, with one Scout even playing taps and sharing it with fellow troop members on social media.

If you have any pictures from the event you would like to share, please send them to Alison Harrison at alison.harrison@scouting.org and they will be added to the Tidewater Council National Camp-In Facebook album.

Tenderfoot Scout Joseph and Second Class Scout Joshua are brothers and members of Princess Anne Troop 504. Since mid-March, the two Scouts have donated 50 masks to the Marine EMS. The boys said that they did not take on the project to earn any credit or badges, but “we did it because they were in need and we wanted to help.”

Ray Latty, Assistant Scoutmaster of Albemarle Troop 127, thought of an innovative way to keep youth active in the outdoors safely. He placed a board with eight brain teasers at a local campsite that Troop 127 often visits. The Scouts go to the site, try to decipher the eight clues (without their parents’ help), and then report back to Ray with their answers. Ray tells them if they are correct or if they should try again. The Scout families visit the site independently to maintain social distancing. Ray replaces the brain teasers each week to continue the fun and keep the youth excited about getting back to camping.

Princess Anne Troop 303 has been keeping active in Scouting. Sixteen Scouts and six adult leaders participated in Troop 303’s most recent virtual troop meeting on May 9. Senior Patrol Leader Tyler led the virtual meeting and Ryan, the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for Training, taught his peers “12 Tips for Using Over-the-Counter Medicines Safely.” Troop 303 Scouts are working on the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, SCOUT Strong, the Crime Prevention merit badge, and the Family Life merit badge.

On May 7, Troop 660 held Princess Anne district’s first virtual Order of the Arrow elections. Congratulations to the new candidates!

David and Tyler, members of the OA Princess Anne Chapter election team and of Troop 303, showed great youth leadership in conducting the elections.

Guidance from the Order of the Arrow on virtual elections and induction date extensions is available here.

Albemarle Troop 116 is staying active, having fun, and giving back to the community. They conducted a beach clean-up and had a contest at the same time. Their Scoutmaster, Blair Seifferman, awarded bragging rights to whomever found the most unique item during their cleanup. The top contenders were $5, a bag of dog waste, and an old sock. The Scouts helped their community and had fun along the way, trying to find unique items on a beautiful sunny day in the OBX. Thanks for your service, Troop 116!

If your unit is conducting a service project, be sure to keep safety as the top priority. Additional guidance is available here.

Tidewater Council Eagle Scout Justin Kilmer answered the call to help other people at all times. In April, Justin went to New York City to serve as an EMT at the Ryan Larkin Field Hospital at Columbia University.

Officer Lora of the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Albemarle Pack 116 made a video to teach Cub Scouts about chromatography. This video helps with the Bears Forensics Adventure, requirement 3a.

We want to hear from you! Send stories, photos, and videos of your Scouts in action to alison.harrison@scouting.org (with parental permission, of course).
