In Fond Remembrance

Thomas van Avery

For those who spent a summer at Pipsico during the last several years, you probably came across Thomas’ path. He often helped to serve cereal at breakfast, ran merit badge programs at the waterfront during the day, and would lifeguard at the pool in the evenings. He was passionate about the waterfront merit badge programs. Because of his dedication and skills, he was going to be the Waterfront Area Director this summer, but unfortunately, the effects of COVID-19 shut down summer camp. Thomas was thoughtful, helpful, and a friend to all. He will surely be missed by all and his Scouting family.

Thomas’ family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pipsico’s Aquatics Program. To donate, you can send a check to Tidewater BSA, or you can give via credit card at https://tidewaterforms.tentaroo.com/tribute. In the Comments or Memo section, please note that the gift is in memory of Thomas van Avery and for Pipsico Aquatics.

BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award

In October, the BSA announced the William T. Hornaday Award was discontinued and replaced by the new BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award.

The BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award will continue to recognize the conservation efforts of Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts, adult volunteers, and other individuals, corporations, and institutions that contribute significantly to natural resource conservation and environmental protection. It has been streamlined and modernized to build on the extraordinary contributions made by all the dedicated award recipients to date. The BSA believes the changes will help make these important efforts even more accessible for today’s members.

Historic Trails

With the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, masks, social separation, and canceled meetings and events, many unit leaders are looking for ways to continue with advancement and youth development experiences. The Adventure Plan (TAP) guides Scout leaders to focus on outdoor adventure as a key element of youth development.

Hiking a National Historic Trail is a great way to expand unit programming. TAP makes it easy to find approved Historic Trails at tap.scouting.org/historic-trails.

BSA Transportation Policy

The Boy Scouts of America’s transportation policy requires all drivers to be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license. Scouting youth under age 18 are not insured under the BSA’s commercial general liability policy and cannot be allowed to drive to or from Scouting activities. This includes a Scout or Venturer under 18 who is driving himself or herself to a Scouting event, even if he or she is the only one in the car. It includes short trips across town and long trips across the country.

Scoutbook

Scoutbook has new URL. If you visit the old web address, it should redirect. If not, clear the cache in your web browser and type in scoutbook.scouting.org to reach the new address. If you have Scoutbook bookmarked, please update to the new link.

If you cannot get into Scoutbook, please email helpdesk@tidewaterbsa.com for assistance.

Planned Giving: Bequests

Benefit your family and Scouting with a will. A will makes a statement about what matters most in your life. By making a will, you ensure that your intentions are clearly expressed, and that they will be followed by those administering your estate. You should decide who will get your estate — after all, you’re the one that worked so hard to get it. Unfortunately, about 70% of all Americans do not make a will, and let their state decide how to distribute their assets.

After providing for family, friends, and others, many supporters of Scouting also include a meaningful gift to their local council to continue their lifetime support. Gifts in a will can be a) specific bequests of property, b) a stated dollar amount, c) a percentage of the estate, d) a gift of the residual (what’s left after all other provisions of your will have been satisfied), or e) a contingent gift (taking effect only if other will provisions cannot be satisfied). Of course, most of the charitable trusts that can be created during your lifetime can also be created in your will for the benefit of family, friends and charities.

Charitable bequests are a great way to provide for Scouting without giving up the assets during your lifetime. When the gift is distributed from your estate, your estate may receive an estate tax charitable deduction.

It is very important that your bequest be correctly stated in your will. Tidewater Council will be happy to provide you and your legal adviser with suggested terminology to ensure that your wishes are fulfilled. Contact Susan Miley-Petrehn for more information.

Scouts in Action

Congratulations new Eagle Scouts!

Zachary D., Princess Anne Troop 791
Luke H., Princess Anne Troop 791
Matthew G., Princess Anne Troop 791
Sam P., Princess Anne Troop 7

Members of Princess Anne Crew 303 attended the ATV course at Cherokee Scout Reservation in North Carolina and had a great time! The Venturers enjoyed learning about ATVs, taking a trail ride, and camping.

Sam P., Princess Anne Troop 7

Princess Anne Troop 362 and Three Rivers Pack 212 joined forces to do a Halloween popcorn sale at Superior Gun Range on Halloween. When not selling, the T-Rex acted like a statue and then ran after the customers. It was a big hit!

Featuring: Bill S. as the 7 ft. T-Rex, Julia S. as the witch, Pam Samples as the Vampiress, and Rudy Nimmo as the Dolphins fan (also Pam’s unsuspecting victim).

Thank you Superior for supporting our Scouts this year!
