Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The Friends of Scouting campaign provides 21% of the council’s annual budget – that means more than a fifth of every dollar in the council budget comes from the generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters. Friends of Scouting keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate.

All Friends of Scouting donations stay local to support families in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. You can fill out a Friends of Scouting pledge card and email it to shannon.foster@scouting.org or donate using the button below:

Clean the Bay Day

June 4

This year’s Clean the Bay Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 4. This annual event is a time for local groups to give back to our local waterways. To find a location accepting walk-up participants, click here.

If you want to volunteer but are unable to attend on June 4, you can participate with Clean the Bay Day DIY. Now through June 3, conduct your own clean-up event. Why not pick up litter during your den or patrol meeting?

Volunteers are welcome to register as individuals or as teams. Let’s Save the Bay! (And don’t forget to log your unit’s volunteer hours in Scoutbook too.)

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

June 10-11

IOLS provides adult leaders with foundational outdoor skills. Working as patrols, participants in this hands-on course learn the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. Upon completion, leaders should feel comfortable teaching Scouts the basic skills required to obtain the First Class rank.

Join us at Camp Baker in Chesapeake on June 10-11 for IOLS.

Flag Day Celebration

June 11

American Legion Great Bridge Post 280 invites the Scouting community to a special Flag Day Celebration on June 11 at 5 PM. The event will take place at American Legion Post 280, 469 North Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23320.

This year’s event celebrates the 99th anniversary of the drafting of the Flag Code by the American Legion and 68 other fraternal, civic, and military organizations. Congress subsequently approved and codified the code in 1942.

BSA units are invited to enjoy refreshments with the Legion Officers and to participate in a ceremony supporting a dignified disposal of several retired flags.

2023 National Scout Jamboree

July 19-28, 2023

The National Scout Jamboree, Scouting’s flagship event, is one-of-a-kind. Over the course of ten summer days, tens of thousands of members of the Boy Scouts of America from across the country gather together to explore all kinds of adventures—stadium shows, pioneer village, Mount Jack hikes, adventure sports, and more—in the heart of one of nature’s greatest playgrounds. With 10,000 acres to explore at the Summit, there is no shortage of opportunities to build Scouting memories.

Tidewater Council is organizing a contingent to attend this awesome event in West Virginia. Youth and adult participants register at both the national site and the council site for payment. For questions, please contact Tidewater Council’s Jamboree Contingent Chair, Erich Röetz.

In Fond Remembrance

Longtime Scouter Rayetta Drew has Gone Home. Rayetta was a Scout leader for more than 40 years. She dedicated herself to improving the lives of the youth of Norfolk.

Rayetta influenced the lives of countless youth and she will be missed by the alumni of Pack 77 and Troop 77, chartered to First Baptist Church (Bute St.), and by all of Tidewater Council. Rayetta received the Legends of Tidewater Council Award in 2001 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1998. She leaves behind her husband, George, and three sons.

News

Group of four Cub Scouts

Family Den Pilot Program

Tidewater Council has been accepted in the Boy Scouts of America National Family Den Pilot Program.

What does this mean?
  • Current Family Packs can have gender-integrated dens from Lions to Webelos (grades K-4)
  • Arrow of Light dens (grade 5) must remain gender separate to help facilitate moving into Scouts BSA
Why?

This pilot is in response to challenges Cub Scout packs have experienced, including:

  • Recruiting enough leaders to have two-deep leadership in every den
  • Having too few girls in the pack or den to have synergy for program delivery
  • Retaining female leaders
How can a Cub Scout pack sign up to participate?

To participate in the pilot program, the pack must fill out a Family Den Pilot Program Pack Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and return it to their district executive. The committee chair and the chartered organization representative both must sign the MOU.

Once the pack turns in the MOU, the council will designate the pack as participating in the pilot. This will allow the pack to set up the dens in Scoutbook.

How to learn more?

There will be a Pilot Program Kick-off webinar via Zoom on June 30 at 8:00 PM. The council will send the link to participating packs one week prior to the webinar.

Another new water bottle is our collapsible silicone 18 oz. bottle. It compacts to about the size of a 6 oz. cup, is BPA free, has an easy drink spout, comes in navy, light blue, and lavender, and sells for $13.99.

NEW Flashlights

Why stumble around in the dark when you can get one of our new flashlights? The new Ultra Superbright handheld flashlight is small, easy to carry, includes three AAA batteries, has an amplified focus lens, brightness of 40 lumens, is water resistant, and just $9.99. Another new flashlight is our Camping Lantern that can be closed and carried as a flashlight or opened and used as a lantern. It has a brightness of 80 lumens, uses 3 AA batteries and is $15.99. The PESKY Itch Away Gel soothes itching or pain from irritating bites, and this 1 oz. bottle is $4.99.

Scout Shop Hours

Our next holiday closing will be July 3-11 for 4th of July week.

BSA Safety Moment

It is recommended to include a BSA Safety Moment during meetings to inform Scouts and parents and keep everyone safe. Numerous downloadable BSA Safety Moments are available here.

Homesickness

Many of us can feel a bit out of sorts when away from familiar surroundings, and Scouts are no different. Many Scouts experience some symptoms of homesickness during campouts, and identifying these symptoms early and addressing them can help make the event a great experience for everyone.

According to the American Camp Association, most campers report at least some homesick feelings during one day of their camp stay. Common symptoms include mild depression, anxiety, withdrawn behavior, somatic—or physical—complaints, and misbehavior.

Training Learning Management System

Training is available either online or in-person.

An advantage of in-person training is the ability to discuss and clarify anything that is unclear with experienced leaders. Leaders attending in-person training can share best practices and ideas that have worked well locally.

Online courses offer flexibility. Leaders can take the modules at their own pace.

The National Council, BSA recently updated the list of modules required for position-specific training. Access the list here.

Merit Badge Counselor Registration

In order to register as a merit badge counselor, volunteers must:

  • Complete Youth Protection Training
  • Complete Merit Badge Counselor Position-Specific Training
  • Submit an adult application with position code 42
  • Submit the Merit Badge Counselor Information Form
  • If counseling the new Citizenship in Society merit badge, complete Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Volunteer Training

Award Spotlight

Keep America Beautiful patch image
Keep America Beautiful Hometown USA Award

The Boy Scouts of America has been affiliated with Keep America Beautiful for more than 50 years. The Keep America Beautiful Hometown USA Award recognizes outstanding efforts of Scouts in their communities in regard to citizenship and environmental improvement. This award for Scouts BSA youth provides a way for Scouts to make a significant contribution toward keeping America beautiful.

When a Scout has completed the award requirements, the unit leader should turn in the application to the Scout Shop and order the patch there.

National Honor Patrol Award

The National Honor Patrol Award encourages patrols to:

  • Have identity and spirit
  • Be active
  • Do Good Turns and service projects
  • Complete rank advancement
  • Wear the uniform
  • Be organized
  • Participate with the troop

Cub Cruises

Ahoy Scouts! Sea Scout Ship 42 invites you to cruise the Chesapeake Bay on their sailboat.

This is a fun-filled introduction to the Sea Scouting program for Cub Scouts and their families. Sea Scouts are part of the BSA and focus on teaching young men and women maritime skills.

Participants will take a three-hour cruise around the Chesapeake Bay, while learning about our tidal habitat and basic ship safety and operations. Each participant will receive a commemorative patch. Contact Sea Scout Ship 42 to arrange a date and time for your pack’s adventure.

Social Media

It is an exciting time to be part of the BSA for many reasons. One of those is that current communication vehicles now enable current and past Scouts and Scouters, as well as anyone else who is interested in Scouting, to communicate directly with each other about Scouting. Online social media tools such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have made it possible for anyone with an internet connection to create and be part of online communities where people can discuss Scouting and share stories, photos, videos, and other types of media.

Many units have set up their own accounts. Please take a moment to review the Boy Scouts of America Social Media Guidelines.

Are you aware of and following the council’s social media outlets?

Recruiting Ideas

There must be at least 50 ways to recruit a family into Scouting. Here are ten ways for any Scouting unit – pack, troop, crew, ship, or post – to recruit year-round.

  1. Social media posts not only on the unit’s page, but also shared on leaders’ pages to reach their friends. Promote upcoming events and invite friends to attend.
  2. Monthly notices in church bulletins about what the unit is doing. Invite members of the congregation to join anytime.
  3. Church or community marquees can advertise the unit. Talk to the unit’s chartered organization representative about what is needed to advertise the unit on their marquee.
  4. Yard signs are great. Move the signs around in the yard and between different leaders’ yards. After about ten days, people do not notice yard signs anymore if they remain stagnant.
  5. Personal family activities are a great way to recruit. Other families at sports activities, musical recitals, and such share the family’s interests, so invite them to the next meeting.
  6. Have an active year-round program that captures youth interest.
  7. Scout activity shirts are not just for Scout events. Ask Scouts to wear their “Class B” shirts to school. Leaders and parents can wear theirs out in public too.
  8. Party Time! Dens, patrols, and units can plan a party or other Normal Friend Activity and invite their classmates to attend. The invitees learn about Scouting by doing a simple activity with a snack. The hosts get to talk to the parents about Scouting.
  9. Make sure the unit has a New Member Coordinator whose sole responsibility is to make sure that new parents feel welcome.
  10. Community visibility is key. Many times, people say they did not know about the Boy Scouts of America opportunities in the local area. Let people know about unit or Eagle service projects by submitting photos and stories to local newspapers, radio stations, or TV stations.
Commissioner service logo

What is a Commissioner?

Commissioners share the mission of preparing young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime. Commissioners:

  • Support unit growth and retention.
  • Help units identify any area that can use improvement and work together to develop a service plan.
  • Link unit needs to the appropriate resources on the district committee.
  • Support unit and district charter renewals.
  • Support unit leaders by providing networking opportunities.

If you can recommend someone who would be a good commissioner or if you want to learn more, please contact your district commissioner or district executive.

SCAM ALERT: Gift Cards for Veterans

Recently, the council was notified that several of its members received an email, purportedly from another volunteer on behalf of Tidewater Council. The email requested gift card donations for veterans in hospice and palliative care. The email requests eBay and Target gift cards and includes instructions for how to scratch off and relay the gift card codes and/or PINs to the scammer via email.

This is a scam. Neither Tidewater Council nor any volunteer made this request.

These messages are fraudulent. Do not reply in any way. Tidewater Council will never solicit funds in such a manner. In the event that you receive a solicitation for support from Scouting or any other organization, we encourage a healthy level of skepticism. When in doubt, we encourage you to verify the validity of such a request with our office.

We do not know the scope of volunteers to whom this was sent or where the individual perpetrating this fraud acquired email addresses. If you received this email or any other fraud or scam attempt, you can report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Community Care Assistance

Does your family need assistance accessing community resources? Tidewater Council is a partner agency with United Way of South Hampton Roads and Albemarle Area United Way, as well as a member of the Unite Us Hampton Roads United Coordinated Network and NCCARE360. For coordinated care referrals, please contact us.
