Scouting America & America 250 combined logo

Scouts get to experience a unique combination of Scouts BSA troop and Venturing crew camping fun, competition, challenges, and learning at the “Tidewater American Adventure” Camporall at Tidewater Council’s Awesome Pipsico Scout Reservation.

Fun and exciting activities are themed on significant eras of the history and unique traditions found only in the United States. This weekend event will also honor and participate in the national “America 250” celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Camporall 2026 Committee is in high gear planning and executing the final program details. The full Leaders’ Guide is available here. Unit leaders will be invited to several informational Zoom calls to find out more about the event, how they can best prepare their Scouts and adult leaders for participation, and answer any questions they may have about the event.

Reserve your unit’s place in this memorable event. Registration is now open on Black Pug at scoutingevent.com/596-26Camporall.

Here’s a sampling of the program events already set for the event, along with their associated historical themes.

Albemarle District Freezoree

February 20-22

Many Scouts have gone to camp before, but this camp will be truly unique.

Prepare to be transported to the 1600s during the early settlement of the Carolinas. A decree has been issued:

It is hereby decreed that all the clans (troops, posts, crews, and ships) within the lands held by Lord Proprietor of the Carolinas and Commander and Chief of Scotland, George Monck, the 1st Duke of Albemarle (the area of Albemarle District) shall present all their able-bodied youth for testing of athletic prowess and skill at the Albemarle District Highland Games. Clans of the Tidewater region in the Colony of Virginia are duly invited. The games will be held at the Encampment of Dinkerderry in Tyner in the County of Chowan within the Province of Carolina.

The events shall include the Haggis Hurl, Tug O’ War, Welly Tossing, Raiding Ladder Build, Sheaf Toss, and Maide-leisg. Clans are encouraged to adopt a tartan and wear it to all events. Tastefully worn kilts are highly encouraged.

The winner of the Games shall receive the coveted Crystal Thistle award.

Due to weather concerns, the Albemarle District Freezoree has been rescheduled to February 20-22. Registration has been re-opened. If you missed the initial registration, now is the time to sign up for your Highland Games adventure!

Scouts Read Sacred Texts Worldwide

May 7

Scouts Read Sacred Texts, an initiative originating from Scouting America’s National Religious Relationships Committee, is now a worldwide invitation to youth, designed to inspire them to set aside some time to read a sacred text from their religion.

The event is held in conjunction with the U.S. National Day of Prayer. Youth are encouraged to read their text on that day, or anytime that week, when it’s convenient. Most Scouts will set aside some time to read the sacred text of their religion at home with their families on the evening of the National Day of Prayer. They can also do it at their place of worship or wherever else they please.

Now in its third year, the Scouts Read Sacred Texts program has grown by 50% and is still growing! Learn more, sign up to participate, download promotional materials, and purchase patches or stickers at scoutsreadsacredtextsworldwide.org.

Our community comes from diverse backgrounds, and is able to work together with peace and love!

Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate. Tidewater Council’s goal is to raise $550,000 through Friends of Scouting in 2026.

Has your unit scheduled its 2026 Friends of Scouting presentation? It is a great opportunity to hear about some of the council’s highlights and accomplishments over the past year, and to illustrate to families how the program is funded. All units that hold a Friends of Scouting presentation will receive a special ribbon for their unit flag. Contact your district executive to schedule your presentation.

United Way Donor Designations

Tidewater Council is a partner agency with United Way of South Hampton Roads and Albemarle Area United Way. Did you know that you can designate a United Way gift to local Scouting?

  • For United Way of South Hampton Roads, you can designate your gift to support Scouting America Tidewater Council.
  • For Albemarle Area United Way, you can designate your gift to support Scouting America Tidewater Council (4004).
Leave a Legacy: James E. West Fellowship Award

The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Tidewater Council endowment fund. This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor’s annual gift to the council’s Friends of Scouting campaign.

Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of someone — an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, Living Legend, or any outstanding Scout or Scouter.

Program Ideas

February
  • Scouting for Food: February 22 – March 1
  • International Stand Up to Bullying Day: February 27
    • The idea that a Scout should treat others as they want to be treated—a Scout is kind—is woven throughout the programs and literature of Scouting America. When a Scout follows the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, bullying and hazing situations should never occur.
    • Have youth watch the age and rank-appropriate Personal Safety Awareness videos.
    • Review and share Scouting America’s Bullying Awareness resources with Scouts and families.
    • For adults, take Safeguarding Youth Training.
    • Review Scouting America’s Social Media Guidelines for valuable information on internet safety and safeguarding youth when using social media.

STEM Learning at the HRBT Welcome Center

The HRBT Welcome Center (9401 4th View St., Norfolk, VA 23503) is booking free STEM learning sessions for student groups through 2026.

The presentations are STEM-focused, while also exposing students to regional history and the wide range of careers involved in the $3.9 billion interstate expansion. Programs can be tailored to any age group and program objective.

Scout units can send requests to [email protected] for a one to two hour visit with project staff and engineers between 9 AM and 4 PM Monday through Friday. The HRBT Welcome Center team can typically accommodate groups of 10-30 individuals per session.

Four Chaplains Memorial Service on February 3, 2026

Scouts from Scouting America Cub Scout Pack 408 and Scouts BSA Troops 19, 362, 408, and 417 attended the Four Chaplains Memorial Service on February 3, 2026, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney Assembly 2588.

The Scouts learned about the heroic sacrifice four US Army Chaplains (also known as the “Immortal Chaplains”) made during World War II and honored their selfless service that transcended religious boundaries. Four men of different faiths:  Lt. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, a Jewish rabbi; Lt. Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister; and Lt. John P. Washington, a Catholic Priest; demonstrated interfaith heroism. A candle was lit for each Immortal Chaplain to represent the light of hope, faith, and unity they demonstrated during that dark, tragic night, before their biographies were read.

At 12:55 A.M. on February 3, 1943, the bell on the troopship U.S.A.T. DORCHESTER rang twice and never sounded again. The ship sank in less than 30 minutes.

Four Chaplains Memorial Service on February 3, 2026

The U.S.A.T. DORCHESTER was torpedoed by an enemy submarine, and 672 young men paid the supreme sacrifice. Included in the 672 were these Four Men of God – a Methodist minister, a Jewish rabbi, a Dutch Reformed minister, and a Roman Catholic priest – all Army Chaplains.

These Four Chaplains gave their life jackets to save four soldiers and, in so doing, gave up their only means of survival. They were last seen on the deck of the ship with their arms linked together and their heads bowed in prayer as they went to their watery graves in the North Atlantic off the coast of Greenland.

Representing the Immortal Chaplains during the Memorial Service were: Rev. Ann On-Lin Tang, LTC, US Army Chaplain (Ret); Rabbi Dr. Israel Zoberman; Rev. Todd DeLaney, LDCR, Chaplain Corps; USN (Ret) and Rev. Father Cerino Bargola, LDCR, Chaplain Corps, USN (Ret); with special guest speaker, Knights of Columbus Calvert Province VA District Master SK Kelly Mortensen, PSD. The Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney Assembly 2588 Color Corps commanded by Tidewater South Regional Marshal SK Ed Nettleton (Quinnipiac Council Eagle Scout Class of 1976) presented the Colors. Tidewater Council Eagle Scout Ian S. (Class of 2025) from Scouts BSA Troop 362 led the Pledge of Allegiance.
