Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The Friends of Scouting campaign provides 21% of the council’s annual budget – that means more than a fifth of every dollar in the council budget comes from the generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters. Friends of Scouting keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate.

All Friends of Scouting donations stay local to support families in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. You can fill out a Friends of Scouting pledge card and email it to shannon.foster@scouting.org or donate using the button below:

BSA Safety Moment

It is recommended to include a BSA Safety Moment during meetings to inform Scouts and parents and keep everyone safe. Numerous downloadable BSA Safety Moments are available here.

Camping Accommodations

In Cub Scouting, parents and guardians may share a tent with their family. In all other Scouting programs, youth and adults tent separately. This means that youth may not tent with their parents, guardians, or any other adults at Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scouting camping events.

What does this mean for Cub Scout accommodations? As indicated in the Guide to Safe Scouting, Cub Scouts may camp in the same tent with their immediate family, which may include their siblings as well as their parent or guardian.

What about Cub Scouts attending Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scouting camping events? The Guide to Safe Scouting prohibits youth who are not registered in the unit from accompanying their parents or their siblings in camping programs of Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouting. Consequently, Cub Scout age youth or other unregistered siblings cannot participate in camping programs with Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scouting units.

Cub Scout Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts can overnight Den Camp with their BALOO-trained leaders. This den-coordinated activity must be conducted using only age-appropriate activities and could occur alongside a Scouts BSA unit, but not as tagalong siblings or individuals.

STEM Awards

The STEM Nova and Supernova Awards are available for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturers, and Sea Scouts. On June 1, 2022, these awards will be administered by local councils rather than the National Council. Award requirements and program support are available here.

All current standards for the awards will remain the same except for the Dr. Albert Einstein Award for older youth. The Dr. Albert Einstein Award will now be approved by the local council instead of a national committee.

All activity and programming used in conjunction with the STEM Nova Awards program must be followed and implemented as designed by the BSA.

Hazardous Weather

For direct contact leaders, staying current on Hazardous Weather Training is an important part of offering a safe Scouting program. This training must be renewed every two years. A registered leader present on all outdoor activities must be current on Hazardous Weather Training.

Like with Youth Protection Training, leaders will now receive notifications when it is time to retake Hazardous Weather Training.

To take Hazardous Weather Training:

  • Go to My.Scouting.org
  • Select the BSA Learn Center
  • Select My Learning
  • Type “hazardous weather” in the search box
  • Click on the “Retake” button
  • Choose “Start Again”
  • Complete the training

Thank you for all you do in serving youth and keeping Scouting safe!

Cyber Chip Emblem

Internet Safety

A recent study by the Federal Trade Commission found that, while young adults and teens are digital natives, they can easily fall victim to online scammers. In fact, according to the study, more people in their 20s fell victim to fraud schemes than people ages 70+.

Use the BSA’s Cyber Chip curriculum to give your children the tools they need to make good decisions and stay safe online.

Transfers

If transferring between councils, it is best to use the online platform at my.Scouting.org

(See this document for detailed instructions.)

This is the easiest option and can be done one of two ways:

    1. Parent initiates the transfer for their Scout, then receiving unit accepts in Application Manager.
    2. Pack initiates the transfer, then receiving unit accepts in Application Manager.
*Note: This process is the same anytime Scouts are switching units, whether from pack to troop, pack to pack, or troop to troop. The previous unit or parent initiates, and the receiving unit accepts.

Development Corner: Matching Gifts

What are matching gift programs?

An extension of corporate philanthropy, matching gift programs are designed to be the means by which companies support employee charitable giving. Companies match donations made by employees to a wide range of non-profits. Approximately 2/3 of companies with matching gift programs match employee donations to nearly any 501(c)(3) organization or educational institution.

Why are matching gifts important?

Matching gifts are a way for donors to multiply their donations at no cost to themselves. This money is often overlooked, due to gaps in knowledge and communication of specific corporate giving programs.

Ratios and amounts

Companies apply minimums and maximums to their matching gift programs. Minimum matches typically range from $25-$100 and maximums typically range from $1,000-$15,000. Most companies with a matching gifts program match donations at a 1:1 ratio, although ratios can be set at any amount the company determines.

The submission process

The entire matching gift process typically can be completed by a donor in less than five minutes.

Follow these four easy steps:

  1. Donation occurs:

Donor donates to Tidewater Council, Boy Scouts of America.

  2. Match eligibility:

Donor determines if their employer matches their donations.

  3. Forms submitted:

Donor submits matching gift request to their employer.

  4. Funds dispersed:

Tidewater Council verifies that the donation was made and the employer issues its matching gift.

Please check with your Human Resources Manager to find out how you can increase your donation to Tidewater Council, Boy Scouts of America. For additional information, contact Susan Miley-Petrehn at 757-284-0796 or susan.miley-petrehn@scouting.org.

Camp Card Sale

Camp Cards are cards that offer valuable discounts to local retailers. Some of the discounts are single-use, while many can be used throughout the year. Scouts sell the cards to family, friends, neighbors, and community members. Units earn a sales commission, which they can use to pay for camping adventures.

Sign up for the sale and reserve your unit’s card order by submitting this form. For questions, please contact your district executive or Susan Miley-Petrehn.
