Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The Friends of Scouting campaign provides 21% of the council’s annual budget – that means more than a fifth of every dollar in the council budget comes from the generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters. Friends of Scouting keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate.

All Friends of Scouting donations stay local to support families in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. You can fill out a Friends of Scouting pledge card and email it to shannon.foster@scouting.org or donate using the button below:

2023 National Scout Jamboree

July 19-28, 2023

The National Scout Jamboree, Scouting’s flagship event, is one-of-a-kind. Over the course of ten summer days, tens of thousands of members of the Boy Scouts of America from across the country gather together to explore all kinds of adventures—stadium shows, pioneer village, Mount Jack hikes, adventure sports, and more—in the heart of one of nature’s greatest playgrounds. With 10,000 acres to explore at the Summit, there is no shortage of opportunities to build Scouting memories.

Tidewater Council is organizing a contingent to attend this awesome event in West Virginia. Youth and adult participants register at both the national site and the council site for payment. For questions, please contact Tidewater Council’s Jamboree Contingent Chair, Erich Röetz.

Group of four Cub Scouts

Family Den Pilot Program

Tidewater Council has been accepted in the Boy Scouts of America National Family Den Pilot Program.

What does this mean?
  • Current Family Packs can have gender-integrated dens from Lions to Webelos (grades K-4)
  • Arrow of Light dens (grade 5) must remain gender separate to help facilitate moving into Scouts BSA
Why?

This pilot is in response to challenges Cub Scout packs have experienced, including:

  • Recruiting enough leaders to have two-deep leadership in every den
  • Having too few girls in the pack or den to have synergy for program delivery
  • Retaining female leaders
How can a Cub Scout pack sign up to participate?

To participate in the pilot program, the pack must fill out a Family Den Pilot Program Pack Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and return it to their district executive. The committee chair and the chartered organization representative both must sign the MOU.

Once the pack turns in the MOU, the council will designate the pack as participating in the pilot. This will allow the pack to set up the dens in Scoutbook.

Scout Shop

Raingutter Regatta

With summer upon us and packs winding up the year, nothing can be more fun than Raingutter Regatta races. Combine that with a picnic and you have a super fun end of year event! The Scout Shop has just what every pack needs for successful races.

Portable Regatta raceways ($26.99) are easy and fast to assemble and can be used anywhere you have a flat surface of 12 feet. Made of heavy-duty vinyl, each raceway measures 10 feet long by 29 inches wide and includes a repair patch. For prizes we have something for everyone: the red, white, and blue medals ($2.99), the bronze, silver, and gold lanyards ($3.99), and 10-pack participation ribbons ($6.99). Kits are now $6.99 and decals $4.99. Whether you do races now or later in the summer, it’s fun for all!

NEW Water Bottles

We have some new items to add to our camping department this year. The 32 oz. “Be Outdoors” vacuum-insulated stainless steel, double-walled water bottle keeps fluid hot or cold for up to 24 hours. With a wide mouth and a clip-on handle, it’s very convenient for hiking and sells for $19.99.

Another new water bottle is our collapsible silicone 18 oz. bottle. It compacts to about the size of a 6 oz. cup, is BPA free, has an easy drink spout, comes in navy, light blue, and lavender, and sells for $13.99.

NEW Flashlights

Why stumble around in the dark when you can get one of our new flashlights? The new Ultra Superbright handheld flashlight is small, easy to carry, includes three AAA batteries, has an amplified focus lens, brightness of 40 lumens, is water resistant, and just $9.99. Another new flashlight is our Camping Lantern that can be closed and carried as a flashlight or opened and used as a lantern. It has a brightness of 80 lumens, uses 3 AA batteries and is $15.99. Our supply of these items is limited, so don’t wait too long to shop!

NEW Repellents

Looking for a Deet-free repellent? We have two new items this year, both Emma Bean products which use natural ingredients and no harmful chemicals. The PESKY Bug Away Spray repels mosquitos, no-see-ums, biting flies, gnats, ticks, and more. The 4 oz. non-aerosol bottle is $9.99. The PESKY Itch Away Gel soothes itching or pain from irritating bites, and this 1 oz. bottle is $4.99.

Scout Shop Hours

Our next holiday closing will be July 3-11 for 4th of July week.

BSA Safety Moment

It is recommended to include a BSA Safety Moment during meetings to inform Scouts and parents and keep everyone safe. Numerous downloadable BSA Safety Moments are available here.

Life Jackets / Personal Flotation Devices

A common misconception in the world of water is that life jackets and other types of personal flotation devices (PFDs) are only necessary for non-swimmers. But in both swimming and boating, U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jackets and PFDs can be the difference between having a fun time in and on the water and having it be your last time in the water.

Annual Program Planning

Many units plan their upcoming program year over the summer. To prepare:

  • Obtain copies of the council calendar, school calendar, and chartered partner’s calendar.
  • Ask youth what they enjoyed doing in the last year, what they would like to do, and what they did not like.
  • Review last year’s budget to see how much items cost and pencil in the amount for the upcoming year.

Preparing the budget now helps with goal setting for the popcorn sale to ensure the unit is funded for a great program year.

Planning Resources

Scout Life Subscriptions

The best time to subscribe to Scout Life magazine is on the unit’s charter renewal. But if you didn’t subscribe during that annual reregistration, you do not have to miss out. Subscribe online at www.scoutlife.org/subscribe-now. Registered Scouts and Scouters can use discount code DIRPAS to get the Scout rate (50% off a one-year subscription).

Summertime Training

Summertime is the perfect time to update training courses. In Tidewater Council, all adults’ Youth Protection Training must expire at or after the end of the charter year. Leaders who plan on renewing for 2023 must have Youth Protection Training that expires on or after December 31, 2023. Why not take the course over the summer to avoid the rush?

Are you planning to change leadership positions in the upcoming program year? If so, now is a good time to take the position specific training for the new role.

Several safety related courses need to be renewed every two years. Take a few minutes to ensure that yours are updated.

  • Climb on Safely (13 minutes)
  • Safety Afloat (22 minutes)
  • Safe Swim Defense (26 minutes)
  • Hazardous Weather (32 minutes)
  • Drive Safely (1 hour) does not need to be renewed but may decrease your insurance.

Cub Cruises

Ahoy Scouts! Sea Scout Ship 42 invites you to cruise the Chesapeake Bay on their sailboat.

This is a fun-filled introduction to the Sea Scouting program for Cub Scouts and their families. Sea Scouts are part of the BSA and focus on teaching young men and women maritime skills.

Participants will take a three-hour cruise around the Chesapeake Bay, while learning about our tidal habitat and basic ship safety and operations. Each participant will receive a commemorative patch. Contact Sea Scout Ship 42 to arrange a date and time for your pack’s adventure.

Community Care Assistance

Does your family need assistance accessing community resources? Tidewater Council is a partner agency with United Way of South Hampton Roads and Albemarle Area United Way, as well as a member of the Unite Us Hampton Roads United Coordinated Network and NCCARE360. For coordinated care referrals, please contact us.
