Patch for MLK Day of Service Scouting America

MLK Day of Service

January 19

Do a Good Turn on Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the MLK Day of Service.

Signed into law in 1994, the MLK National Day of Service federal legislation challenges all Americans to use the MLK holiday as a day of volunteer service in honor of the civil rights icon. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service, when all Americans are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities.

For ideas on planning a service project, visit scoutshop.org/blog/honor-dr-kings-legacy-earn-the-mlk-day-of-service-emblem.

If interested in placing a special order for MLK Day of Service emblems, please contact the Scout Shop Manager, Staci Van Kirk, at [email protected] or 757-497-2688.

Cannonball Trail in Norfolk, VA

Wreath-Laying for the Burning of Norfolk 250

January 31

A wreath-laying ceremony in commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the Burning of Norfolk and Defeat of Lord Dunmore will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 201 St. Paul’s Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23510.

After a surprise defeat at the Battle of Great Bridge to militia forces, the Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, was forced to move his government aboard ships floating in the Elizabeth River off of Norfolk. In retaliation for Norfolk’s refusal to supply provisions for his ships, he ordered his fleet to fire on the town. In the end, the entire city of Norfolk was burned.

St. Paul’s Church is the only pre-revolutionary building remaining in downtown Norfolk, and a cannonball from the bombardment is still visible in the wall today. Norfolk’s historic Cannonball Trail is named in recognition.

The wreath-laying is sponsored by the Norfolk Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution, the Great Bridge Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Old Cannonball Society Children of the American Revolution.

Scout units and families are invited to the commemoration. Consider walking the historic trail as an activity!

Friends of Scouting

Friends of Scouting is Tidewater Council’s annual giving campaign. The generosity of Scouting families, alumni, and community supporters keeps the overall cost of Scouting affordable so all families can participate. Tidewater Council’s goal is to raise $550,000 through Friends of Scouting in 2026.

Has your unit scheduled its 2026 Friends of Scouting presentation? It is a great opportunity to hear about some of the council’s highlights and accomplishments over the past year, and to illustrate to families how the program is funded. All units that hold a Friends of Scouting presentation will receive a special ribbon for their unit flag. Contact your district executive to schedule your presentation.

Norfolk Southern Foundation Grant

The Norfolk Southern Hampton Roads Community Fund has awarded Scouting America Tidewater Council a $10,000 grant to support the council’s mission to serve youth in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Tidewater Council is grateful for the Norfolk Southern Foundation’s support, and pleased to spread Scouting’s values and programs to more area youth.

United Way Donor Designations

Tidewater Council is a partner agency with United Way of South Hampton Roads and Albemarle Area United Way. Did you know that you can designate a United Way gift to local Scouting?

  • For United Way of South Hampton Roads, you can designate your gift to support Scouting America Tidewater Council.
  • For Albemarle Area United Way, you can designate your gift to support Scouting America Tidewater Council (4004).
Leave a Legacy: James E. West Fellowship Award

The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Tidewater Council endowment fund. This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace, the donor’s annual gift to the council’s Friends of Scouting campaign.

Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of someone — an Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, Living Legend, or any outstanding Scout or Scouter.

Program Ideas

January
February
  • National River Day: February 2
    • Learn about the Scouting for Clean Waterways conservation initiative.
    • Take a riverside hike.
    • Organize a river cleanup.
    • Discuss sustainable water choices with Scouts.
  • Scouting America’s Birthday: February 8
  • A Scout is Reverent
    • Each February, around the time of Scouting America’s birthday, Scouts around the country focus on the 12th point of the Scout Law: reverent. Through celebrations that can be either inter-religious or specific to a particular faith, Scouts can reflect on faith. Every unit can celebrate these days as they choose — some opt to attend a worship service wearing a full field uniform, participate in a worship service, or conduct a service project for a religious organization.
    • Scout Jumuah (Islam) is February 5-6, 2026.
    • Scout Shabbat (Judaism) is February 6-7, 2026.
    • Scout Sunday (Christianity) is February 8, 2026. However, units and chartered organizations are free to schedule their Scout Sunday on any Sunday in February.
  • Scouting for Food: February 22 – March 1
  • International Stand Up to Bullying Day: February 27
    • The idea that a Scout should treat others as they want to be treated—a Scout is kind—is woven throughout the programs and literature of Scouting America. When a Scout follows the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law, bullying and hazing situations should never occur.
    • Have youth watch the age and rank-appropriate Personal Safety Awareness videos.
    • Review and share Scouting America’s Bullying Awareness resources with Scouts and families.
    • For adults, take Safeguarding Youth Training.
    • Review Scouting America’s Social Media Guidelines for valuable information on internet safety and safeguarding youth when using social media.

Scouting America builds character, teaches leadership, promotes resilience, encourages fitness, develops confidence and communication skills, and allows Scouts to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and become the best versions of themselves. Scouting High Adventure at Northern Tier’s Okpik Winter Camp, 21 miles north of Ely, MN, is extreme and perhaps is one of the most mentally challenging, and also physically challenging, Scouting High Adventure experiences.

An amazing crew of young women from Troop 1791 in Virginia Beach, plus one close friend from Troop 5364 in Virginia Beach, adventured to Northern Tier’s Okpik Winter Holiday Stay from December 28, 2025 to January 4, 2026.

This crew braved single digit and sub-zero temperatures for a full four days and three nights outside, just a few miles from the Minnesota-Canada border. For two nights, while the Scouts slept under the moon and stars in wind breaks, temperatures reached -9° F (yes, minus!) with a high in between of only -1° F.

The Scouts enjoyed hiking more than ten miles while pulling their gear in sleds, moving camp each day onto different frozen lakes, cross country skiing, dog sledding, and learning about ice fishing. While they bravely faced some adversity from bitter wind chills, they had a lot of fun keeping spirits high. The Scouts celebrated New Years Eve with peppermint patties, line tag, dancing the hokey pokey, and singing a few songs on a beautiful moonlit night!

These Scout’s dedication to learning leadership by doing, building team spirit, being “physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight,” and finding their health and wellbeing through conquering challenges is to be celebrated. The life skills and resilience they developed will no doubt serve them as individuals, team members, citizens, and eventually as leaders in any field they choose.

Four Scouts and two adult Scouters also earned their Triple Crown of Scouting High Adventure with this winter trek!

Watch out! Great, adventurous, and resilient leaders are rising in Scouting America Tidewater Council, and they’re going to do amazing things!

Scouts BSA Troop 5 at Wreaths Across America 2025 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA

Wreaths Across America invites the community to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom.

Scouts from Troop 5, Troop 24, Troop 180, and Troop 375 answered that call at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk on December 13.

The Scouts joined Wreaths Across America in remembering and honoring veterans through the laying of Remembrance wreaths on the graves of our country’s fallen heroes, and the act of saying the name of each and every veteran aloud.

Thank you for honoring our veterans and ensuring that none are forgotten.
