K Building Overview

In the spirit of Scouting, we have a year-end challenge for all of you. As part of the ongoing renovations to the K-Building, and in order ensure great longevity of this facility, we would like to complete this structure with a 100 year metal roof that is insulated. We have raised $10,600 towards our goal of $14,400. We need these additional dollars before we can hire the contractor to complete this work. The contractor is on hand and eagerly waiting to complete this project

Pipsico Scout Reservation has been the heart of Tidewater Council’s camping operations since its inception as a Boy Scout Reservation in 1958. Encompassing 916 acres of woodland, open field, and marshes, Pipsico has serviced thousands of Scouts and Scouters for over 57 years. In an effort to ensure that the original history of the reservation is acknowledged and preserved for generations to come, the Tidewater Council is embarking on an endeavor to preserve and renovate the property’s oldest original Scouting structure, the “K-Building” in Camp Kiwanis.

It is the goal of the council to transform the aging structure into a resource that can be used by all units within the council to facilitate youth leadership development and training. Additionally, in an effort to encourage use of the property by all levels of Scouters, the K-Building is being designed to house the first “flushing” toilet and shower facilities that Camp Kiwanis has ever had. Specific renovations to the K-building, most of which have already been started, include but are not limited to:

  • Installation of four (4) individual bath and shower facilities.
  • A full working kitchen suitable for providing light meals during training events.
  • A small conference room.
  • A large fellowship room suitable for hosting of training activities.
  • Replacement of all windows with modern double pane insulated windows.
  • Replacement of all doors with fiberglass insulated doors.
  • Installation of a 100-year standing seam metal roof.

If you would like to contribute to this specific project on the K-Building please send a check to the Tidewater Council with the memo line noting for the “Kiwanis Building.” All funds received for this purpose are restricted to this building and will only be applied to projects on this building. Most of the initial funds raised have come from the local Kiwanis Clubs and Kiwanians.

We thank you in advance for preserving the traditions of our facilities in new and modern way. Some pictures of the progress we have had, along with a little more history on the K-Building and the formation of Pipsico Scout Reservation and Camp Kiwanis is included below for your enjoyment.

According to historical accounts provided by the Kiwanis Club of Virginia Beach, the Kiwanis Clubs funded the first building on Pipsico Scout Reservation that was built solely for the use of the Tidewater Council, Boy Scouts of America. Starting in 1945, the Kiwanis Club raised funds in an effort to begin the founding of another Scout summer camp to replace the original scout summer camp of the “Norfolk Council”. The original funding drive by the Kiwanis clubs raised over $11,000.  Concurrently, the Scout Council “traded” their reservation known as Camp Darden for the current property on which the K-Building resides, Pipsico Scout Reservation. When Pipsico became available for development, the Kiwanis Club raised an additional $6,000 to add to the original amount and donated a total of about $19,000 towards the construction of the main building inside the section of the property that would house summer camp operations for thousands of Scouts. Due to the significant contributions from the Kiwanis Clubs in Pipsico’s early years, the part of the reservation that housed Tidewater Council’s first summer camp on the reservation was named Camp Kiwanis, and its primary structure located in the heart of the property was dubbed the “K-Building”.
